Airbus Reveals A380

Its not anything new to know that one of the largest aircraft manufacturer has launched its new model, the Airbus A380
into the family of jumbo jets. The new aircraft is the largest commercial airliner in the sky today. It trumps the Boeing 747-400 Jumbo Jet by offering a full upper deck cabin, longer range and wider body. This mega-jet will be serviced by selected airlines on their long- haul routes. It was the inevitable. The race to the top for aviation supremacy has been long
fought between
Airbus and its rival, Boeing. So the questions that arise are, who will lay out the cash for such a large aircraft
and exactly how much cash are we talking about? Well we did some research. Take a look inside the largest flying commercial airliner in the skies today and who's forking over the dough to offer their passengers a unforgettable experience.

This aircraft take flight. The A380 can handle more passengers, travel farther and fly higher. The aircrafts ceiling tops out at
around 43,000 feet. The A380 is in fact, so large, many airports are equipped with runways long enough to handle such an
enormous size. Only the large city hubs, such as London's Heathrow, New York's JFK and California's LAX are some of the
airports that can accommodate this giant.

So where does such an aircraft of its size get put together? The two decker Airbus was assembled in several cities across Europe. There was no manufacturing facility large enough to
accommodate its needs. So each part of the
plane was assembled in various cities and then all brought together one by one like a jig saw puzzle. Wales, Germany, Spain and France all took part in the design and manufacturing of the Airbus A380. Approximately 25% of the plane is constructed of carbon-fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP). Materials included in the design were important and key to keeping the weight to a limit. The plane had to be larger than the 747-400, just as light if not lighter and able to handle a heavier load. This was a costly challenge. So just how cost effective is this new aircraft? It's not remarkably lower than the 747, however with more seats in the plane, this allows airlines to accommodate more assengers. Every extra passenger on an A380 represents money made by the airline above and beyond what they could have made on a smaller plane. The increased range also helps add to an increased number of "seat-miles" per flight. The end result is a drop in per-passenger operating costs of 15 to 20 percent, according to Airbus

$300 Million Plus? So who exactly is tretching their wallets for this $300 million plus aircraft? At first it was unsure which airlines would be interested in acquiring such a plane. Many airlines wouldn't even have use for an aircract
of its size. Where would you fly it to? How would you fill every seat on board? These were all questions airlines were asking and trying to answer in the race to be the first kid on the block with this new toy. It would only make sense for the large world carriers that have long-haul routes to purchase the A380. Airlines like,
Singapore Airlines, Emirates, Quantas and Malaysian Airlines have scooped up the jumbo jet in order to accommodate their passengers on long routes spanning almost half way around the world. With its range, the A380 would have no problem flying a route like Dubai to New York or Los Angeles to Sydney non stop. For the airlines that can afford to pony up the dough for the new A380, are also spending fortunes on cabin layouts. For the frequent flier, you've never seen cabins like these. The large space allows for more flexibility and creativity to go
into the design of the layout. For example, on Emirates Airlines, the United Emirates national air carrier, it has been rumoured that more than $20,000 USD was spent on the design and manufacturing for a single firs class seat. Do the math and you'll see exactly what it takes to lavishly furnish one of these unique aircrafts.

Delivery storey of Air Bus A-380 to Emirates Airline

Emirates Airlines has taken possession of the group's very first Airbus A380. The super jumbo flew out from the factory in Hamburg, Germany and touched down in its new hub, Dubai, last night. AME Info's Phil Blizzard was aboard the delivery flight, interviewing Airbus and Emirates executives and sampling the products on offer.

This is the first of 58 Airbus A380s on order, with the second due to be delivered in late September.

One of three configurations bought by Emirates, the first flight has seats for 489 passengers.

All three classes feature increased comfort features - First Class cabins even include their own shower. All three classes feature increased comfort features - First Class cabins even include their own shower.

Emirates will also be undertaking measures to make the plane even more fuel efficient.

These include reducing the onboard weight by getting rid footrests and inflight magazines and newspapers.

The first commercial flight will be on the Dubai to New York route, leaving on 1 August.

Destinations of Emirtaes Airline

Emirates flies to over 100 destinations in 56 countries on six continents from its primary hub in Dubai.[20] It has a strong presence in the Southeast Asian region, which together, connects Dubai with more international destinations in the region than any other Middle Eastern airline. The airline also flies the Kangaroo Route. Emirates does not offer any domestic service within the United Arab Emirates.

While Emirates does not maintain sizable hubs elsewhere, it has taken advantage of liberal bilateral aviation agreements between Dubai and Australia, and with Singapore, to offer more onward connections from Sydney and Dubai. For example, Emirates now uses their A380 to fly to Auckland via Sydney, allowing passengers in Sydney and Auckland to do the quick hop across the Tasman with Emirates' new super jumbo.[21]

In September 2007, Emirates' chairman, Tim Clark, stated that the airline is considering the Boeing 747-8 to serve Latin American cities such as Buenos Aires and Mexico City. He also said that Emirates is working on getting new flyover rights over Russia to minimise the length of the flights to North America's West Coast.[22] Cities on the West Coast being looked at for possible expansion include Phoenix, Arizona[23] and Seattle, Washington.[24] Emirates also is to begin double daily flights to Glasgow and an upgrade to the Newcastle link. Speculation is also growing in relation to Emirates' Glasgow route as it has been rumoured that the airline may begin flights from Dubai via Glasgow to New York(JFK,) much like the Dubai-Hamburg-Kennedy route dropped last year.

Emirates is also considering launching service to Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Dallas/Ft. Worth, Miami, and Washington, D.C.,[25][26] and plans to begin service to Madrid and possibly Barcelona, Spain in Spring 2009.[27]. The airline is also interested in initiating service to Calgary and Vancouver some time in 2009, although economic conditions and government regulations will determine whether such service is viable[28].

The airline had also been planning flights to Durban, South Africa which were expected to start in December 2008.[29] However, this was postponed in June 2008, with the rising cost of fuel being cited as the reason for the cancellation.[30]. The airline however did announce that flights to Durban will commence, but only after the oil price becomes more stable. The Airline is now planning on starting flights to Durban from October 2009. [31] In addition, flights to Alexandria, Egypt were suspended on 10 September 2008 also due to the record price of airline fuel.[32]

Codeshare agreements

Emirates has codeshare agreements with Continental Airlines, where it codeshares on selected regional routes, in addition to the following airlines:[34]

In March 2008 Emirates ceased its codeshare agreement with SriLankan Airlines.[35]

Performance of Emirates Airline

The airline has recorded a profit every year since its inception, except the second, and growth has never fallen below 20% a year. In its first 11 years, it doubled in size every 3.5 years, and has every four years since.[10] The Emirates Group announced a net profits of Dhs5 billion (US$1.37 billion) for the financial year ended 31 March 2008, a 62% increase over the previous year.It is said that Emirates airline's turnover is almost 1/5th of the Dubai's GDP. [11][12]

For 2004–05, Emirates paid an increased dividend of Dhs368 tmillion to the government of Dubai, compared to Dhs329 million the year before. In total, the government has received Dhs1.1 billion from Emirates since dividends started being paid in 1999. Having provided an initial start-up capital of US$10m and an additional investment of circa US$80m at the time of the airline's inception,[13] the Dubai government is the sole owner of the company. However, it does not put any new money into it, nor does it interfere with running the airline.[10]

In the financial year 2007/2008, Emirates carried 21.2 million passengers and 1.3 million tonnes of cargo. International Air Transport Association (IATA) statistics indicate that in 2007 Emirates ranked among the top-ten airlines in the world in terms of passengers (17.54 million) carried and kilometers (71.3 million) flown in 2006/2007. In the fiscal year 2007/08, passenger seat factor increased to 79.8 per cent, up 2.6 percentage points from the previous year, led by an increase in traffic by 20.2 per cent.[6] The airline carried 21.2 million passengers in the 2007/08 fiscal year, a 21% rise from the previous year.[11]

History of Emirates Airline

The airline was established on 25 May 1985 by the Dubai government. It started operations with flights to Karachi and Mumbai followed by Delhi in September. Two Airbus A300 and Boeing 737-300 were leased from Pakistan International Airlines (PIA). Subsequently two Boeing 727-200 Advanced were acquired from the UAE's Royal Flight. These aircraft were used until Emirates began taking delivery of a fleet of newly built Airbus A300-600R and Airbus A310-300 wide-body aircraft. The first European destination to be added in July 1987 was London Gatwick and Far Eastern operations commenced to Singapore in June 1990. Emirates acquired a financial stake of 43.6%[7] and a management contract for Air Lanka on 1 April 1998, which subsequently changed its name to SriLankan Airlines. In January 2008, Emirates announced that it will pass the management of SriLankan Airlines to the Sri Lankan government in April 2008.[7][8] There are no plans to remove or decrease the stake in the airline.[7]

The Emirates Group is a public international organization holding company headquartered in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. The Emirates Group is the parent company of the Emirates Airline airline and Dnata, an aviation services company. Emirates Group also used to own a 43.6% stake in SriLankan Airlines, until they sold it back to Sri Lankan Government. Emirates Airline has 35,000 employees, and is wholly-owned by the Government of Dubai. [9]

Emirates Airline

Emirates Airline :

*(shortened form: Emirates) (Arabic: طيران الإماراتTayarān al-Imārāt) is a subsidiary of The Emirates Group based in Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE). In 2007 the airline was the eighth-largest airline in the world in terms of international passengers carried,[2] and fifth-largest[3] in the world in terms of scheduled international passenger-kilometres flown. It is also the ninth-largest in terms of scheduled freight tonne-kilometres flown (eighth in scheduled international freight tonne-kilometres flown).[4]. The airline ranks amongst the top 10 carriers worldwide in terms of revenue, and has become the largest airline in the Middle East in terms of revenue, fleet size, and passengers carried and is the eighth largest airline in Asia, in terms of passengers carried. The airline operates over 3,710 passenger flights per week, to over 100 destinations in 62 countries. Cargo activities are undertaken by the Emirates Group's Emirates SkyCargo division. Its main base is Dubai International Airport.[5] On 16 October 2008, Emirates moved all operations at Dubai International Airport to Terminal 3, a new terminal dedicated exclusively to Emirates. Terminal 3 is over 1,500,000 m2 (370 acres), the single largest terminal building in the world.

During the 2007/08 financial year, Emirates carried 21.2 million passengers. A total of 1.3 million tonnes of cargo was transported by Emirates Airline and Emirates SkyCargo, the freight subsidiary of The Emirates Group.[6]

Emirates is one of only six airlines to operate an all wide-body aircraft fleet. Emirates will have 122 Boeing 777s in its fleet by 2011 making it the single largest aircraft type in fleet, and 58 Airbus A380s by 2012. The airline also hopes to have over 120 Airbus A350's in its fleet by 2016. The airline expects to have over 200 aircraft in its fleet by 2013. Experts suggest, that Emirates will have over 500 aircraft in their fleet by 2021.

Emirates became the second operator of the Airbus A380 when their first aircraft was delivered on 28 July 2008. It is now in operation on the Dubai to New York JFK, Dubai to London Heathrow and Dubai-Sydney-Auckland routes.
